The Valier School Board took the first step in asking voters to approve a bond measure to repair the Valier pool at their meeting on Jan. 26.
The board listened to comments from the public before approving a motion to hire D.A. Davidson to provide financial analysis and taxpayer information on the proposed project. The board also approved retaining the law firm of Dorsey and Whitney to serve as its Bond Counsel. The Missoula-based law firm will begin the process of offering a bond for public vote to fund the pool project.
During the meeting, which attracted nearly 30 people, the school board heard comments and questions regarding the fate of the pool. Though many had concerns, the response from the public supporting the pool project was overwhelming. No one who attended the meeting spoke out against the project.
According to Valier Schools Superintendent Eric Gustafson, Valier may be eligible for a matching funds grant, or other grants to help defer the estimated $285,000 cost to refurbish the pool.
No numbers are finalized at this point, but Gustafson expects to have concrete numbers available within weeks.
“I watched a friend of mine drown when I was a boy, because he did not know how to swim,” said Russell Aiken. “I don’t want any of these kids to go through what I went through; losing a friend like that.”
No decision has been made if the bond issue will be a mail-in ballot or one where voters will go to the polls.
Gustafson explained, After the bond issue has been presented to the public, 70 days must pass before the official vote can take place.
“It is important to point out that a minimum of 30 percent of the registered voters in the school district must turn out to vote, or it won’t be valid,” added Gustafson. In order for the bond resolution to pass, however, 60 percent of those voters must approve it. If voter turnout is 40 percent or more, though, the measure will pass with a simple majority vote.
More information on the proposed bond issue will be published as it becomes available.
